A Night of Theatre and Music

Just before the world (and CHIRS) shutdown for the COVID19 pandemic in March of 2020, the talented actors of CHIRS put together a theatrical masterpiece called "The Hand That You Were Dealt". The piece consisted of personal anecdotes, musical numbers, and a touching story that we could all resonate with. This was one of our most successful productions; we were hoping to take this momentum and continue with other plays and/or musicals. Alas, the world shut down around us.

On June 21st, 2023, after three long years of COVID19 shutdown, CHIRS premiered another homegrown show, "Healthy Hearts the Musical". The musical was facilitated and directed by Yvonne N. and Dave S., alongside a group of talented and amazing actors who took to the stage at CHIRS head office. The group of actors and cast members included Josh M., Kim G., Neil D., Peter C., Sandra S., Shannon Y., Sharon S., and Simon A. The group has been rehearsing the musical for months, demonstrating exceptional determination and motivation. The story revolves around the main character, Guy, who feels that his life is currently approaching a tipping point, and he is unsure of what direction to follow. Up until this point, he feels that he has been making the wrong choices which results in Guy not feeling good about himself. With guidance from helpful role models, Guy starts to make healthier decisions, he learns from the societal influences around him, and ultimately grows confident in himself.

Initially, the group had begun as a discussion group with the purpose of educating each other of the many paths toward living a healthy lifestyle, including nutrition, exercise, mindset and so much more. As the pandemic had imposed a sedentary lifestyle on most, this was an opportunity to learn about the ways that we can be good to and benefit our hearts. The discussion group built up exercise programs and nutritional recipes. Then the group evolved to incorporate the participants' love of music and dance, morphing into a musical. They created original songs, such as Gold Medal Life which is a song about the small steps in dedication to living a healthy lifestyle and how that can help one accomplish their ultimate goals. The cast was overwhelmingly welcoming, and the audience enjoyed seeing smiles from Shannon Y., Kim G., and Sandra S. Through and through the play ran seamlessly with the help from Peter C. who was always prepared to move props and sets in a safe and efficient way.

When watching this show, you could see the different passion and unique characteristics of every single individual who put extraordinary efforts into the musical. Each character exhibited unique components and personality traits that came from the actor that played them. Whether it was Josh M. who added hilarious dramatic gestures to his character of a strict game show host who did not allow talking or cheering within the gameshow. Or Sharon S. who shared her impeccable knowledge of nutritional values that can be added or substituted within each meal. As well, Neil D. shared a delightful motivational speech with his great range of tone that helped the audience embrace their own positive mindset. The musical was made with the contributions of these actors, and they excelled! Each step of the way the group collaborated, helping one another with their cues, getting to know one another, and creating an inclusive space for all!

The musical was engaging and interactive which unleashed a keen sense of learning amongst the audience. The audience included CHIRS staff, clients, family and friends; all of whom came together to share the CHIRS community and celebrate the success of the play. As we watched the play, we enjoyed how the genuine characteristics of kindness and caring for one another shined through. Participants responded to one another just how they would have in everyday life. A personal favourite scene was when the entire group participated in a fitness workout. As the group danced, we were dancing along in the audience too! A huge shout out to Simon A. for his impeccable dance moves that inspired the rest of us to begin our days with a little bit of dancing. After the musical, the audience were tested on their knowledge for an opportunity to win a prize; congratulations to the winners from our audience including Mirko S. and Jan L.

Overall, the premiere of Healthy Heart the Musical was an awesome opportunity to celebrate the group that worked hard to create it, learn about living a healthy lifestyle, and come together as a community.
